Run-a-way 4020 JD

One hot summer day in July,I was ask to help in cutting siliage on our South Georgia Farm. I was probably eleven or twelve years old and had very little tractor driving experience by myself.The siliage cutting involved a four man crew, a man cutting siliage with a 4440 jd and pull type cutter,a 4430 jd with a blade packing siliage in a pit, a 4240 and a 4020 jd pulling wagons from the corn field to the pitt.One of dads tractor drivers had not showed for work that day,so he said' You are big enough,com on'.I was excited and a bit scared,but ready to go.I was chosen to drive the 4020 (old modle with a synorange shift).I was doing pretty good driving until I started down a hill and went to shift from 6th gear to 8th,I slowed the tractor's engine down and thats when it happened.I slowed the engine down too much and shut it off at the top of the hill and it took off,I had forgotten to release the clutch because I was holding on for dear life .Thank God, the tractor was in gear before it stalled,at the bottom of the hill I relized what I had done and let out on the clutch, the tractor slowed and I finally stopped it.I was so scarred I jumped off of the tractor and ran and got a farm hand named Robert to help me get the tractor back on the road.He calmed me down and told me what I had done wrong.I never told my dad his old 4020 would run about 55 miles per hour down a hill,because he loves that old tractor an still ownes it.
