This past week my wife and I visited our son out in Las Vegas. We walked over the new bridge at Hoover Dam (900 feet over the river!) and had a good view of the water level at the dam. Lake Mead is 124 feet below capacity, and it's clearly visible how low it is.
Coincidentally, I read the book "The Johnstown Flood" by David McCollough on the flight out. Amazing story. I suppose everyone in PA knows the story, but for those who don't, here's a nutshell version: In 1889, the city of Johnstown, PA was situated below a large earthworks dam, owned by wealthy people who used the reservoir as a summer retreat. The dam had been badly repaired, and there was no way to control the water level. During a heavy rainstorm, the dam failed and the resulting flood wiped out Johnstown, killing over 2000 people.
