It doesn't take a large deployment of military men and women to set up a mess hall. At least that was true in Nam. Companies didn't have them but battalions certainly did. But even then, company sized units in a forward base would often receive big thermos containers of remotely prepared food.
Don't know why anybody worries about rations while in camp. The govt isn't going to starve anyone.
What always amazed me were the nutcakes at Camp Lejeune who would only eat from the concessionaires who were "pay to eat" contractors. Their menus were mostly fast food. It didn't take long to spend your measly $78 per month.
Why worry about his diet and creature comforts? He enlisted, is doing what he wants to do, and is earning good pay. And he is not in a combat zone. Get a life or plow some snow.
