Some of the GM corporate HD axles are not available with that ratio - but the 1 ton truck is available with the Dana full-floating 9 3/4 and 10" axles, Chevy 10 1/2" full-floating, and also the Rockwell 12" full-floating. The Dana and Rockwells do have the 3.42 option and usually have an extra RPO code of "Y" something. All you need to do to check is get one wheel off the ground - put the trans in neutral - spin and count the turns. Look to see how far the driveshaft turns to make the wheel turn once. If the ratio is 3.42 - the driveshaft will turn about 1 3/4 turns to 1 turn of the wheel. Exception is if you have a posi and cannot turn one wheel with the other on the ground. If so, jack both up and then - for a 3.42 -the driveshaft will turn 3.42 turns to one turn of the wheels. A truck with a small-block engine and such gearing with a TH400 would have trouble getting started on steep hills with a heavy trailer behind it - unless it's 4WD with a low-range available. But, with a 454 and a matching torque-converter - it's probably not a problem with the high gearing. I've done a lot of towing with 3.08 axles against a TH400 - but have to put the transfer-case into low-range to get started up steep hills with a load.
