As always, I'm prepared to get shot down, but with a look at the books, I'm pretty confident my memory's comin' back. I believe the longer side of the splined center goes to the outside, and the washer fits up on the inside end, under the bearing, to make up the difference. If that matches up with what you're finding with any taper in the splines, that'd boost my confidence even more.
