Okay, it sounds like it's wired to provide power to the idiot light and the coil, then separate them when the switch is off. It's just fine the way it is. It's GOOD, in fact. There is no way to backfeed the coil from the alternator so the tractor won't keep running with the switch off. Maybe the wire just fell off the #1 terminal on the alternator. Maybe the alternator was replaced with one that is self-energizing. Does it charge without the idiot light being connected?
