Success with BN

This summer I purchased a well maintained and old but fairly well restored BN with new rubber. When I brought the little girl home she was running very poorly but, since she seemed to be fairly well intact I figured I could easily fix that. Turned out to be more complex than I planned. Good compression but cylinders 2 and 3 would not fire. New plugs, wires, rotor, points -great spark on all four; rebuilt carburetor; set timing. No change, she was still only limping. I removed the valve cover, eureka! Intake valve guides on 2 and 3 were completely detached from the rocker arm. There was horrible rust and gunk. The springs on the other end of those two rockers were set. Block of wood and a small hammer, tap/tap. Springs were free; slipped the guides under the rocker arms. She started and runs like a new watch. This may all seem simple to you folks who have been doing this for years but this is one of my first experiences with anything other than the bolt-on auxiliary systems to an engine. Valve cover removal may not seem like much to some of you but it was a big step for me. And it came out very well. Now I have a question. How can I clean up that area under the valve cover without getting crud into the cylinders?
