Hydraulic fluid is a pretty broad term. It can mean just about any type of oil, from the stuff you put in the power steering in your car, to the heavy duty stuff that goes in heavy equipment. In the belly pump you can use just about any of it, and it will still function,(I know from experience), but your best bet will be to follow what the manual says. That being said, I can also tell you that whatever you put in the engine will also work in the belly pump. you can also use Hy-Tran, and, dare I say it here? John Deere transmission-hydraulic fluid will work just fine. I think the problem with foaming comes only with continous, heavy use.
