Two 12 volt batteries together but only 12 volts

I just thought that someone might know the answer to this. I will put into tractor context. Say I wanted an extra battery to be charged by the altermator on my SM. How would you wire them(series or parralel) so that that could happen but not provide 24 volts back to the system and burn things up. thanks!
