A Tractor Named Allis

A Tractor Named Allis
You are at a tractor show and a little boy riding on a tractor with his Grandfather says, 'Hi this is our tractor her name is Allis'. To him this is the greatest thing in the world, riding on a old tractor with his Garndpa. Now, like Paul Harvey says, ' For the rest of the story'. Allis is a 1949 Allis Chalmers B. This tractor has been in our family for it's entire life. The little boy riding on the tractor is the 5th generation of our family to ride on this old machine. It's first owner was my Wife's Grandfather. When he passed away her Father became it's second owner. It came to our house before the passing of her Father, but he has also passed away. Little did I know that less than a year after we brought the tractor home from it's 8 year sleep in the dusty old barn, it's second owner would no longer be here. Few collectors are as lucky as we are, to have a piece of family history as well as a good running old tractor. When we first got the tractor home the first thought was to get the old girl running. It turned out that that wasn't much of a problem. A new set of points in the magneto and some new spark plugs, a change of oil and removing the 8 year old gas from the tank and carburetor. In less than a week it would start with less than a full turn of the crank. The next order of business was to get the 50 years of grease off the tractor. After several applications of de greaser and use of the power washer most of the grease was gone, but there were still some stubborn spots, At my Sisters suggestion I tried oven cleaner. It not only took off the grease but also the paint. So now we had a tractor that was clean but missing most of it's paint. The new paint was applied and now she looks pretty good. The first show was last year, As luck would have it my Fatherinlaw got to drive the tractor in the pirade. I was on the announcers stand introducing the tractors and their owners and there he was on his old friend Allis. It took me by suprise to see him there, then I collected my self and announced this is my Fatherinlaw on a 1949 Allis Chalmers. I never got to know my Wifes Grandfather, he passed away before I was part of the family. Those who knew him say he was a great guy. The back of the tractor seat bears his name, as he was known by his Grandchildren, Grandpa B. I was fortunate enough to get to know my Fatherinlaw. He was also a great guy. When he passed away I found out that I wasn't the only one that thought of him as a gentelman. He was deeply loved and respected by everyone that knew him. I hope that when I ame gone they will say the same of me. One thing I do know, the tractor named Allis will still be in our family for future generations to see. It's not just a neat old tractor, it's part of our famil history.
