Too Young to Know
In 1948 my dad bought a new 8N Ford, it came with a pick-up disk. I got on it the minute it was unloaded. Dad wanted to see just what it would do. I was 14 at the time so when I came to the end of the field there was a turn road and a fence. I pulled the power lift and the front wheels came off the ground - I went through the fence into a public road. I hit the left brake and turned around with the front wheels still up in the air. I put another hole in that fence before I could stop it.
My dad was more than a little upset. Needless to say with all the scratches on the new tractor he helped me get off by grabbing my arm and throwing me to the ground.
Well I didn't get the job of driving that tractor. He assigned me to the irrigation crew. The pipe was laid and this huge pump was backed to the the ditch that was filled with water. By the way this pump was new and had a big Chrysler V/8 with straight exhaust pipes that you could reverse the exhaust and prime the pump . You guessed it - I was told to start the pump and prime it. When it was primed I opened the throttle wide open and when the water hit the end of that pipe all heck broke loose. The pump was pushed backwards and flipped upside down in that ditch full of water. This all happened as my Dad watched from his car.
I had to me a job in a store as I was not allowed to touch not even a hammer after that. He always told everyone that I could brake an anvil wirh a rubber hammer.
