MY FOLKS, MY THREE SISTERS, AND I MOVED ON A FARM IN THE MID FORTIES WHEN I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD. MY DAD HAD BEEN WORKING FOR ANOTHER FARMER AND DECIDED TO TRY RUNNING A FARM AND SHARE-CROPING. THE OLD FARM WE MOVED ONTO WAS OWNED BY DR. AND HIS WIFE, AND HD BEEN CORNED TO DEATH OVER THE YEARS TILL THE SOIL WAS IN TERRIABLE CONDITION. THE ONLY TRACTOR ON THE FARM WAS AN OLD FARMALL REGULAR ON STEEL. RIDING I WITH MY DAD IT WOULD BEAT YOU TO DEATH. AFTER THE FIRST YEAR DAD BOUGHT ANOTHER REGULR, ONLY THIS TIME IT HAD RUBBER TIRES. WHAT A TRACTOR. I REMEMBER THE DAY THEY DELIVERED IT. MAN, WAS I EXCITED. DAD WAS A VERY GOOD FARMER AND BEGAN AS BEST AS I CAN REMEMBER, DOING SOIL TESTS AND ROTATING THE CROPS SO AS TO GET THE SOIL BACK N CONDITION. MY FOLS HAD SOLD THEIR HOME AND DAD WAS USING SOME OF HIS OWN MONEY TO BUY FRTILIZE AND LIME. SOMETHING THE FARM HAD NOT BEEN GETTING FOR A LONG TIME. AFTER ABOUT FIVE YEARS OF LONG DAYS AND NIGHTS, WORKING THE FARM FROM EARLY MORNING TO LATE AT NIGHT, THE CROPS STARTED TO SHOW A GREAT IMPROVEMENT. HOWEVER, THE DRS. WIFE, WHO HAD THE SAY SO OVER THE FARM, HAD NO IDEA AT ALL ABOUT FARMING, SO NATURALLY SHE DIDNT UNDERSTAND ROTATING CROPS AND BUILDING THE SOIL. ALL SHE WANTED TO DO WAS PUT LITTLE INTO THE GROUND, BUT REAP MUCH. IT JUST DON, T WORK THAT WAY. SO, SHE ASKED MY FAMILY TO MOVE, WHICH WE DID. SHE IMMEADITLY GO ANOHER CORN RAISNG FARMER WHO BEGAN DRAINING THE FARM AGAIN. AND NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE FARM WOUND UP IN RUINS. SUCH A SHAME. ANY, MY DAD WAS REALY HURT, BUT LIFE GOES ON. HE WENT TO WORK AT PUBLIC WORKS AND RETIRED FROM IT. HOWEVER, WE STILL LIVED IN THE COUNTRY, AND I WORKED FOR THE LOCAL FARMERS, PICKING UP POTATOES, BAILING HAY, (WITH A HAND FED, HAND TIE BALER. ) HARD WORK, BUT I LOVED IT. ONE OF THE FARMERS I WORKED FOR HAD A FARMALL H THAT I SPENT MANY, MANY HOURS ON PLOWING THE FIELDS. ANOTHER FARMER I WORKED FOR HAD AN M, SUPER M, AND SUPER MD. MAN, I WOULD HAVE GIVEN ANYTHING TO HAVE DRIVEN ONE OF THOSE, BUT THEY THOUGHT I WAS TOO SMALL. WELL, I TO, WENT TO WORK IN A STEEL MILL AFTER A TIME IN THE NAVY, AND A NOW JUST RECENTLY RETIRED. STILL HAVENT FORGOTTEN THE 'BIG' FARMALLS. GOING TO GO PICK UP AN M THAT I JUST BOUGHT LAST WEEK. AFTER FIFTY YEARS OF WAITING, GUESS I, LL FINALLYGET TO DRIVE ONE. I PLAN ON REBUILDING IT JUST LIKE NEW, AND DOING A LITTLE 'ANTIQUE' PULLING. AS THE OLD SAYING GOES, YO CAN TAKE A BOY OUT OF THE COUNTRY, BUT YOU CN, T TAKE THE COUNTRY OUT OF THE BOY.
