The Windup Watch

During my last year of teaching (2001), I was wearing an old Timex watch that my father had given me some years before. My newer battery-operated watches were all out of battery power or suffering from whatever thing watches suffer from. One day while in class the students were working on an assignment when one of the boys noticed me sitting at my desk winding my watch. He asked me what I was doing and I told him. He was obviously confused and I explained to him what the winding up does and that it really is a replacement for a battery in an electric watch. He was quite amazed at the whole thing to be quite honest. Months later when we were at his graduation night exercises, he came up to me and asked if he could show his friend who was with him the windup watch. I guess now looking back that I should've given the watch to him but at the time I didn't think of it.
