| I recently purchased a 1940 9N Series Ford Tractor. My wife and I had just completed our new retirement home in a rural part of Virginia, and were looking for a tractor of some kind to use on the two acres surrounding the house. We have a gravel drive, and a lot of grass, and some woods on the property. When I spoke to the tractor dealer he asked me why I needed a full size tractor. I told him 'need' had nothing to do with it. 'Want' was more like it. My grandfather was a Ford Tractor dealer in Shephardstown, WV, and as a child I spent a lot of time with him at the dealership. My father was in the Pacific during WWII, and my mother moved back into her father and mother's home for the three years that my father was away. I have very fond memories of those grey and red tractors. Since my grandfather was a dealer, it stood to reason that his brother-in-law would farm with Fords. My greatuncle had two Ford tractors. My brother and I loved to visit the farm, we each had a tractor to drive. If my greatuncle was lucky, he even got a little work out of us. I have used the tractor several weekends, and would not trade it for anything. Last weekend we set 12 cross ties (railroad ties) up one side of the driveway. The 3 point hitch worked great with a chain to lift and drag the ties into position. Frankly, I am the envy of the neighborhood. The little John Deere lawnmowers are nice, even with their trailers, but they can't do the work that we can. I purchased a 60' Bush Hog finish mower, a scraper blade (rear mounted), and a high lift attachment for the tractor (don't remember the name of it). I built a 4X4 box for the high lift, with 12' sides. My wife uses it to haul her plants around, and bags of mulch, pine straw, etc. I am sure my son will be using this tractor long after I am gone.
