Hot Rod 101 | When I was 14, Grandpa brought home an old dog-eared 1941 Massey-Harris Super 101. The engine ran, but just barely. It burned massive amounts of oil, the rear main peed oil, the clutch slipped, one front tire and rim were missing, one rear was flat and both were bald. All the sheet metal was missing, etc. , etc. You get the picture. His reasoning for getting this old heap was this. . . Dad's Super 88 Oliver! Dad considered his S88 the ultimate puller and that Grandpa's Masseys were vastly inferior. Grandpa got sick of dad's bragging and plotted revenge. The old 101 was powered (?) by a Chrysler flathead six. Grandpa went to a salvage yard and got a 265 cid Dodge truck engine, rebuilt it, and planted it in the old 101. He got replacement sheet metal, new Firestone Champion Ground Grip 13-36 tires and painted the tractor and installed new decals. This top secret project lasted most of the winter. Come spring, Grandpa bravely hitched Dad's 4-16 Oliver plow to the old Massey and proceeded to literally run circles around dad's Super 88!! Both dad and Grandpa are now gone, I am 51 years old and those two old tractors sold when dad passed away. I don't necessarily miss the Super 88, but would love to find a Massey-Harris 101 Super with Twin-Power to play with and pull. I might even install a 265 cid flathead like Grandpa did just for kicks. Thanks for listening. . . . . . . Greg, from AZ, entered 2001-11-05 |
