|I'm Dave Kolbenschlag, living in southwest Florida previously in New Jersey and Ohio. Interested in John Deere and Allis Chalmers of 1940's and 50's vintage. I have a restored 1948 JD model A. I bought it with a newly rebuilt engine but did the rest of the work on it myself. It was pretty rusty but otherwise in good shape. |
I live in a rural area if there is such a thing in Florida. It is rural in respect to lots of unused land around but little farming. I have only 1/2 acre so JD does not do much these days. I do load it down sometimes skidding some logs for myself and neighbors for firewood. I like to consider it a working tractor rather than show although it does look real good.
I dairy farmed as a hired hand when a teenager in Ohio in the late 1940's and early 50's. We had an Allis Chalmers WD and a JD H. Farmed about ten years altogether. Have always wanted a tractor of my own since but only recently had the space, time and able to squeeze some cash. It is my goal now to get an AC WD to fix up, when I get enough spare marbles to buy it.
If anyone hears of a fairly decent WD, let me know. Guess parts are harder to get for AC, it was pretty easy to locate the JD parts I needed. I bought my JD in Wisconson, have most of its history. Cost me as much to get it hauled as the tractor cost! I do not have any means to haul it myself. I am married (a second time) with a daughter 8 and a son 12 who was and is a big help with the model A. My wife has no interest what so ever in farming or tractors, except to try to keep tabs on how much I spend on them. ;-)
My son and I go to shows when we can. I might be able to help someone with questions about JD but I usually have a lot of questions myself! Anyone is welcome to ask anyway.
I recently bought a nice Allis Chalmers WD for a real good price along with a mounted plow which is almost like new. The tractor needs paint and a little mechanical work but I plowed 5 acres with it right away and it runs like a champ! My son and I are now (November 1998) in the process or tearing down the WD and restoring what needs to be done and will then paint it and put it to work.
