I've been working on putting a Detroit 4-71t in a 4-175.

That 3208 always vibrated bad and it was really lazy but it always started good until it started pushing coolant out of the radiator.

Why a Detroit instead of, well whatever? Just curious. An old guy I know, a friend of my dad, he put a 6v71 in an allis 440. Still using it to work ground.

I got a feeling that's going to be way down on power. 284 cubes in a 20,000 lb 4wd? I'm thinking that would have been a better match for an S-10 pickup. I think an 8.3 cummins would have been a lot closer match to what he took out of there.

Careful there, your going to get yelled at for saying that, then they are going to say that the rack is out of adjustment. Yes in my opinion any thing but a Detroit would be a big improvement.

I totally agree with you on that gutless Detroit. I had a 1950 with the 4-53 Detroit in it, 212 cubic inch noise machine. It was a 4 valve engine, N65 injectors, and completely rebuilt, and yes the rack was set correctly. It was still gutless. I would rather keep in in 2WD and brake traction then engage the 4WD because the Detroit could not handle and extra axle to turn. I always missed the fact that there was not a diff lock, but much like the 4WD, the Detroit would not want to spin both rear wheels. It was a great day when that left and a I bought a JD4240.

I will answer you as you don't seem quite as anti Detroit as Hay maker? The 4-71 T is an excellent replacement for the 3208. Not sure what he has in it for injectors but 200 H.P. and around 500 ft/lbs will not be an issue for a 4-71 T and it will run forever if its built as well as it looks. What a lot don't realize about the Jimmy is you can not really compare cu /inch of a two stroke to a 4 stroke. No you cant let it idle at 1200 RPM and expect it to lug but wind er up and as some say "drive it like you hate it" and it is one amazing engine. With the turbo it wont even be all that loud! It will be interesting to see what the originator of this post has to say after he gets it in the field. I will bet he is impressed with not only the power but with the fuel economy as well. All that being said even a 5.9 Cummins would have ALSO been a good swap, and one heck of an improvement over the 3208.

I agree. We just sold an Allis HD14 with a 6-71 and you have to have the rpms to do work with that thing. Compare that to say lugging a D8 and they're night and day to how they do work. Different strokes for different folks. I like the conversion, looks fun.

This tractor wasnt built heavy enough to handle much more than 175hp. This detroit has n70 injector in it so its supposed to be 180hp at 2100 rpm. I'll let you know by next week when I get it in the field how it performs.

Curious to know how this worked out
