1655 won't start when hot

Lately my 1655 won't start when
hot. Like starter is dragging.
Starter was gone through last
year. Yesterday after running
for hour and half on grain
drill, tractor ran hot and
almost locked engine up. Is my
radiator/thermostat plugged up
or engine need rebuilding? Oil pressure gauge reads 40 psi but oil light was flickering.

I have a 1750 with the diesel and it did this often. On a diesel the starter has to be real good or you get this issue when hot. I have worked on my starter several times. It sounds like this is recent so a good guess would be the starter itself as they wear in the bushings and can drag the armature on the casing when worn. I would take it apart and check the bushings on the ends for looseness. Check the brushes to make sure the ends are still good and they still have some length and the springs still work. If all of that is not real good hot starting problems will happen pretty easily. I have a ground cable from the battery right on a bolt on my starter so the unit has the best possible ground. This is often a major issue too. The starter works best if it has the best possible ground, grounding through the engine is not often good enough.

My Waukesha running hot in a hayfield, maintains around 40 lbs oil so that seems fine. Check the thermostat for sure, just in case, especially if it is running hot all of a sudden. If you can't take a look at the starter yourself a good auto electric shop can do a real good job and that is where I take mine often. Hope you get it figured out.

Thanks WC. I did in frame job on the engine in 2010.
Starter has always been grounded on starter. Had starter problems last year with not starting when warmed up in hayfield. Had starter gone through at reputable shop.
Solved problem then. Started having this problem again this spring when mold board plowing. It came to a head yesterday on the grain drill.

Emptied the radiator today. Flushed until clear water exited drain. It starts up fine but no movement of water looking through the filler neck. I think the thermostat is stuck closed. Will remove theostat and inspect. Any thoughts?

I think you're on to something
jw. Ive removed the thermostat
and will test it tomorrow. If
it checks okay I'll inspect
water pump.thanks.

My late model 1650 same as 1655 was doing the same thing, I put a gear reduction starter on it
and it starts when hot. My 1855 was running hot, went through the part of removing the thermostat, still heated, had the radiator clean, it don't heat now
