550 transmission leak

Bought a 550 gas this year and the transmission is leaking in front which would require a split to fix. I have complete manuals and, while I don't claim to be a mechanic, I'm somewhat capable. How much of a job is it to fix the leak? Guess I could let it go, hire some to fix it or tackle it myself. Also, are parts / seals available?

Other issues are loose spindles, sloppy steering, tach and heat gauges not working. Also seems to have gear noise when pulling a load.

Any advise / ideas on repairs would be appreciated.

Ferd: Do you have the factory issued shop manual?   First the tractor is split in what was known as a "Z" split.   It's pretty simple, only requires a small number of hardware removal, one wire disconnected and two floor jacks.   Do not split between engine and clutch housing, you will have one H--- of time reassembling.   You need to make wedges for the top of the front axle to prevent the front half of the tractor from tipping.   There are three seals in the section where you are now. There is only one that is below the oil level, it's inside the driven PTO gear and is missed by many that have worked on these tractors and the leak continues.   Drain the transmission/final drive fluid.   To get to that seal you need to remove the PTO clutch housing and it requires a spanner wrench (will probably have to make one)to remove the nut that holds on.

I have replaced the seals in my 550 and helped a friend with his Super 55 and corrected the leak.   Seals are available through any Bearing Seal business like Motion Industries.   I can give you the manufacturer numbers. Send me an e-mail and I will give you more information, by referring to sections of the factory manual.

Thanks for all the good information. The manuals I have consist of three big books that I bought from this site. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated as I don't have your email. Most likely I'm going to either ignore it or see if I can find someone to either fix it or give me a hand. Lots of little things to fix on it so I guess another option would be to look for a newer tractor.

Korves Oliver Parts offers a complete 550 PTO seal kit, it includes all the O rings and seals needed to do this job. Yes, don't forget the seal inside the driven gear. I just ordered and installed with great results. Made the spanner wrench on my own using a 24" piece of 2" pipe with two key stock tabs welded on the outside. Worked well. ...1/2 day job.
