Front distributor. Good battery, new starter but not even a click when I hit the starter. Nothing. Engine turns over freely without the spark plugs in. Any ideas? Thanks, Basil

Idea #1 - no power to starter solenoid.

Bad connection at the battery or the ground Bad starter switch or bad battery cables. Take a heavy wire and jump across the 2 big terminals on the solenoid. Be sure it is out of gear when you do that. If it spins over then try grounding the small post on the solenoid and it is turns over then, then the starter button is bad

You could also have the wrong type of solenoid.

The type used on your 8N needs to be grounded at that terminal to energize (that is what your starter button is supplying if working correctly), and a car or truck type needs 6 or 12 volts of power there to function (coming from the keyed ignition switch or a small push button).

If grounding that terminal doesnt cause it to click and the starter to spin, then try jumping from the battery terminal on the solenoid to this terminal. If it now works doing that, you have the wrong type of solenoid.

.......or the two large terminals have the batt and start motor terminals reversed

Lots of good advice from those that know more than I.

But, it is a new starter. I'd start there, pun intended.

Make sure in neutral and run a jumper cable from the non-ground post on the battery (no mention of + or - ground set up in OP) to the starter.

If it turns then starter is good and it has ground, proceed with help mentioned above.

If not starter has bad ground or it's a bad starter.
