8N shift problem

wont shift into 1st or 3rd gear--all other gears no problem
whats the likely problem before i dig into it?
parts catalog shows rail for 1st and 3rd gears and fork for 1st

escribe motions of shift lever & what you observe/feel as you try to shift into 1 & 3. Can't move, hard to move, doesn't feel like anything at all is moving??

Mine does the same thing, shifts smoothly into 2,4 and reverse but, 1st and3rd are a wall.

Take the top off of the trans and find out!

Look for this badly worn part.

Be careful removing the top cover. There is a little spring in the back that likes to jump out and cause you grief.
