Rope gaskets on oil pan

Hi again everyone!

I'm getting ready to put my oil pan and timing cover back on, I've never used rope gaskets before is there anything I need to watch or do? I usually use some type of gasket dressing but I'm guessing that's a no-no on a rope. Is it still OK on the timing cover gasket and oil pan side gaskets?

I copied this other 8N web site, from the engine assembly how to repair section . I have used this procedure twice with good
results. the procedure applies to both block and pan. That site has a very good how to repair for all sort of repairs for the Ford
8N tractor.

With the retainer in place, work the rope seal into its groove. Use a large socket and work it in which is easier with a dry gasket
(wet gaskets swell). Once in, trim the ends flush to just slightly higher than the block. Use a sharp knife producing a clean cut.
With the seal in place carefully apply engine assembly lube to the crank side of the rear seal keeping it off the ends of the rope.
Repeat the lube application after the seal has set for a while

I use a "little" RTV behind the seal retainers. Then insert ropes, cut just slightly above retainer / block. Then right before buttoning up, a little, strategically placed amount of RTV where the rope ends will butt.

I don't personally let the oil pan gasket go between the ropes, some folks do. I butt to the ropes. I use an even smaller amount of RTV here.

I also like the rope seal up front, while others like the modern lip seal replacement. I have had a tuff time getting that type to center properly.

I do ALL this with the engine out, on a stand.

No Gasket sealer on oil pan gasket, it will squish the gasket out of position. A little Permatex on the timing gear cover is OK. RTV on Governor to cover later. No matter how hard you try, none of these governors are "Flat" anymore.

Oh Yea, a bit of assembly lube on the rope right before setting crankshaft. These rope seals make for a tight fit up.

Thank everyone for the tips. New gaskets will be here tomorrow, family and I have been enjoying a few days out in the woods.

If this is an N series tractor then I would recommend going with the one piece seal in the front versus the rope seal.
