Can I just leave the old factory lifters in when installing new valves, instead of installing the adjustable ones? Do I need to set these old ones in any way to maintain spec backlash?

Besides that, have you checked the cam end of the lifters to see if they are worn flat or even dished.

What do you mean by replacing valves? Are they the early mushroom type or the newer type. the lifter gap has to be correct.

Looks like I'll be buying lifters too. I hope the old ones come out w/o having to pull the engine off the tranny. If this isn't possible, can i pull the cam shaft with the block still attached to the tranny?

That's a loaded question. If you can't get the lifter out, it would be difficult to get the camshaft out. But it can come out while still attached to the transmission.
