Just purchased a 50ish model 8n. It has been converted to an alternator. But when i try to check voltage output with meter, the meter goes crazy. What could be the problem? Any help is appreciated

he meter. Many digital meters do not typically function well in the electrically noisy environment of these old machines. Get an analog meter.

The chance of you alternator conversion being wired correct is slim.
Then you could have a number of different conversions. 12 volt, 6
volt, one wire, two wire, internal regulator, diode in line, resistor in
coil, resistor in line, and ect. Have the alternator test at your local
shop. The get a wire diagram and your meter. Good luck!

Where are you measuring at? Hook the 2 leads to the battery and take a reading and then start the tractor. If it's a 1 wire alternator you might have to increase RPM's to get it to energize.
