OT 64 Ford 2000 4 Cyl Gas PTO Not working properly

Fellas I hooked up my finish mower yesterday for the first time on this tractor and found that the PTO doesn't seem to work properly. I cannot engage the PTO by pushing in the trans clutch. I have to kill the tractor, engage PTO and start the tractor. Also when I engage the trans clutch, the PTO does not stop. The trans otherwise works fine. Is this going to be a big deal to fix? I also have a post over in the Ford forum, but many of you also have experience with these 2000's. It is a 5 speed.

Live or transmission PTO?
Sounds like maybe you have Live and the
pto disk is stuck to the pressure plate.
First of all adjust the pedal according
to your I&T FO-20 manual.
When that is done, with the engine off
engage the pto handle. Then start the
engine and go mow in some heavy grass.
While the tractor/mower are working hard
push the clutch in all the way several
times. That should free it up.
Post back.

Thanks Dog. I hate to admit it but I don t know the difference between live and not. Can you give us newbies a primer? That 2000 performed night and day better than my 2N. The 2N could handle that 6 finish mower but it wasn t happy doing it. The 2000 had no trouble besides the Pto issue. I will give that solution a shot.

I'm not as familiar with your 4 cylinder
tractor as I am with the 3 cyl models
but on yours, if it has Lpto it should
have have two holes in the little clevis
on the front end of the clutch rod.
Second photo shows the clevis on a 3 cyl
with only one hole.
Look at yours for a clue on what you
have.
General info:
A double clutch or live pto tractor has
two input shafts into the transmission.
First photo. Notice the small splined
shaft inside of the larger splined tube.
The small shaft drives the tractor -
much like an N if you've had one of
those apart. The outer splined tube
drives only the pto. Again this is a 3
cyl that I happen to have split here but
if you have lpto it would be very
similar in appearance..
On a lpto tractor you have two clutch
disks in the pressure plate. The front
disc drives only the small splined shaft
and the rearmost disc drives only the
outer one.
If you press the clutch half way down it
stops only the tractor.
If you press the pedal all the way down
it stops the tractor and the pto.
Likewise when you start from a dead stop
the pto starts turning First and gets up
to speed then as you continue to let the
clutch pedal up the tractor starts to
go. Let us know if you have two holes in
your clevis.
PS,
There is also Independent pto but I
won't go into that type now as Ford did
not put that in your model.

Sure enough Ultradog, I had two holes in my clevis, and the pin was in the front one, effectively locking out the PTO clutch. That actually is a pretty clever option for folks that never use a PTO, takes about 1/2 the pedal motion out, much lower to the foot rest. As you suggested, moved pin to rear hole in the clevis, then adjusted per the Op manual and all works like a champ. The manual is great for details once you are in the zipcode, but honestly I don't think I would have figured it out without you guys. Much appreciated !

Well,
I didn't suggest you move the pin to the
other hole. You figured that out on your
own. Kudos!
You will like that pto and tractor.
Get your mower up to speed before moving
into the thick stuff.
Stop the tractor and let the
mower/engine catch up.
No need for an orc at all anymore.
And you have an extra gear plus another
10 ponies under the hood.
If you don't have it yet, start looking
for a 1955-64 junker with power steering
to swap over onto yours.
Live hyds plus Live pto plus PS - makes
them a real sweetheart.
