Ok, please speak simply if you reply. I?m a newby
and this is all new to me. I recently acquired a ?50
8N. It starts. It?s runs. The previous owner has had it
for 3 generations and the tractor has had little to no
TLC or even significant maintenance in decades.
One thing I was warned about was a leaky radiator.
I found it beat all to heck and spot repaired dozens
of times. My solution was a new radiator and hoses.
When I removed the old radiator upper hose a LOT
of thick, gray, oil (?) poured out of it. What?s up with
that? Am I still good to put the new radiator and
hoses on or is this evidence of something
catastrophic?

This is a W.A.G. on my part but......Bars Leak looks oily when you put it in a radiator. However, I don't know what it looks like after residing in a coolant system for an unknown period of time.
If it was my machine I would continue with the radiator and hose replacement and see what happens. Some more experienced folks will provide some better guidance I am sure.

Good luck and post back your results/decision.

Yes, indeed since the radiator has a history of repairs I would also suspect the goo is more likely sealer rather than engine oil. The upper radiator hose should have a thermostat installed to help the engine come to operating temperature in cooler weather. This site should have them for sale - the stat is pushed inside the radiator hose.

Bars leak is brown more of a rust color.

Engine oil will cream up somewhat like shaving cream will be beige/tan.

Combustion byproducts will be tar black and sticky.

I have seen some stop leaks that are a silver/aluminum color... Why because they contain a mix of metal with lots of copper and aluminum in it...

I would agree someone has doped it up good...
