Valve job on an 49 8n

I think when it warms up, I may take a peek through the inspection covers and see what’s going on with my valves. Seen a few YouTube videos on doing a hand lap job on new valves. I may take a crack at that... if needed. Anyone else do this rather than taking it to a shop ?

WHAT do you expect to see looking in the tappet area that mite indicate the valves need to be lapped?

You mite note sticking valve(s), but that has nothing to do with lapping or grinding.

Check that the valve adjustment is correct, then do a cylinder leakdown test to discover if any valves are actually not sealing/seating before even considering removing the head.

That’s pretty much what I want to see... if the valves are sticking, then I’ll do the leak down test if no sticking is noticeable...

I’m not sure what your asking? My original post is simply to see if anyone else hand laps thier valves or takes them to a shop to be done..

I have hand lapped valves with success but if I had the equipment or access to it I would grind the seats and valves and then lap them.

Years ago we hand lapped valves all the time worked very well, I still have the tools to do it, had to use them two years ago on a old combine motor because didn't have room to work
with the other tools it took time but it worked out well

On new valves after grinding the seats you should hand lap them and then ck to see how they seal.
I've lapped valves on used heads before installing them just to be sure they'll seal but that's a real budget job type deal.
On a 70yo flathead engine if the valves aren't sealing it's most likely time for a rebuild.
