Aternator in the rain ??

Hi All,

Last year I converted my 48 8N to 12 volts.

Today it is drizzling and I need to use my 8N. I never thought about this before, but how sensitive is an Alternator to getting wet in the rain ?

Thanks,

-Steve

While it's certainly not ideal for an alternator to be exposed to the elements, there's 10's of thousands of farm tractors that were built new with alternators that are unprotected, and it really isn't an issue.

Over time, as dirt and debris get packed around the windings and other electrical components this can be a source of battery drain when the material is wet, and can corrode and damage components due to electrolysis.

Typically takes many years and hours of use to get to this point.

Automotive alternators are not intended to be directly exposed to the elements, but you will probably get away with it for years.

Converted a 2N to 12 V over 20 years ago. It always sits outdoors in the rain, snow or what have you. Delco 10SI lasted that long. I don't think it's much of a problem.

The most common wet / rain failure of a 10SI Delco is that the regulator blades (Terminals #1--#2) seem to be un plated steel which will rust to the point of the regulator plug losing connection. Packing the regulator plug full of electrical grease helps a lot.
