If I decide to replace the painted lug nuts on my restoration 8n. Should I paint them with clear or do they come protected off the shelve (exact original). Thanks mike.

I doubt that you an find any that are coated right off the shelf, Do whatever makes you happy, I see that you have bolts holding the air precleaner on. Both of my 8ns have flat head screws, your look like fender bolts. Nice looking machine!

You can spray them with clear if you like but the socket will
scratch and/or chip it while they're being installed.
Might get away with clear coating them after they're installed.
I have not tried doing it that way.

Most lug nuts come with a Zinc coating that will corrode over time unless you live in an arid climate.

Even though not authentic, I actually prefer the painted lug nuts as seen on my 1950 below.

The original wheel nuts, both front and back, were never painted; they were cadmium plated. If you have the originals and painted them and now wish to remove the paint, simply put them in a plastic pan of white vinegar for a few weeks to remove the paint with doing any abrasive damage. It'll take the pain, rust, and dirt off but won't harm the cad plating. Dennis Carpenter repops them, exact-as-original -see LINK - that includes the original AF (Across Flats) dimension of 1-1/16". If you want to put a new coat of paint on them, try the EASTWOOD Company for a cad simulated paint. This is all based on if you want to restore it to original looking, but as the late Dell always said, "...it's your tractor, paint it ennythang you want except green and yeller...".
