I just rebuilt a 9n engine and the oil pressure has me totally confused . I put a new oil pump and pick up tube on it because it had no oil pressure when I tore it down . Complete overhaul every thing new . When I started it there was no oil pressure I removed the oil lines and no oil was being pumped I filled the oil filter and then took my air hose and blew the oil back in the oil pump it then had 5 lb pressure now you can start it maby it has pressure and next time not . HOW CAN IT HAVE OIL ONE TIME AND NOT THE NEXT ? I need help!

It should be clear that something is not up to specification.
  • [*:ed7db71786]Who did the block assessment prior to the rebuild?[*:ed7db71786] Who did the measuring for the new parts and how? [*:ed7db71786]Who did the machine work needed to replace the oil pump?[*:ed7db71786]Who checked the clearances on the final assembly and how?[*:ed7db71786]Who checked the pickup tube and verified there are no leaks?[/list:eek::ed7db71786]That's a starting point for further diagnosis of your problem.

hey Mac........in 1939, Ford spec'd 30wt detergent, 40wt fer HOT work like hilling cotton. Modern multi-vis is so much better in 2017. Me? I use 20-50wt in ALL my vehicles; including 1969 BMW 2002 that I picked up at the factory in Munich, Germany. It now has 387K miles and is in semi-retirement like me. I also used it in my 1999 Dodge Cummins Diesel; my 1992 Volkswagen Diesel pickup; my 1973 BMW Baveria 4-dr autobaun cruzer; and my eazy starting 6-volt
52-8N. As to yer specific question, ya gott "prime" the oil pump by filling it FULL of grease like vasoline, otherwize it won't suck. ........HTH, oily Dell

I had a machine shop do the work vat and clean turn the crank and measure all the bearings. but with all the lines loose it pumps no oil on one start and maby two starts later it pumps oil

get yourself a jug of 90W with a piece of fuel line on the nozzle. unscrew the 15/16" plug on the timing cover, just to port of the coil. remove the plug, it has a spring and a plunger behind it, don't lose anything. stick the end of the fuel line thru the hole the plug was in, and past it thru the second hole, an inch or so further in, that the plunger goes into. squeeze 4 or 5 ounces of lube in. now your oil pump is primed, don't forget to reassemble ;)

I did not prime it but it will pump oil on one start and maby two or three starts later and then it has low pressure

If it pumped once it was primed. Your application of air pressure would have primed it. Once it is primed it should remain primed without further intervention. If it won't you have a problem that needs to be identified and fixed.
