Finding the model year on a Ford 8N

Where the serial number should be located, my tractor shows JC476 and nothing else. Any ideas where I can find the serial number? Left front axle has 8N-3011, bottom of transmission has 8N-605-B and side of transmission has 8N 024.

Sounds like it may have had an engine replacement in the past. All that really matters, doesit have a front distributor (1939 thru mid 1050)
or does it have a side distributor (mid 1950 thru the end of production.

Jim........unless yer sphincterly challenged, all ya need to know is wheather yer dizzy is the weird 4-nipple front mount ...or... the more common looking 5-nipple sidemount. (you kenn count nipples, kent you?) Since the N-engine was used in many applications, (including oil well and irrigation pumps apps) they have been commonally enterchanged. The numbers you quote are CASTING numbers. .........HTH, the amazed Dell

Over time there may have been a few parts swapped or upgraded . The starting point is to confirm it is an 8n , 4 speed , both brakes on the right , 8 lug rear hub with a 2" nut on the rear .

There is a front mount and a side mount distributor , a 4 bolt or 2 bolt steering gear box , single or dual rear axle seals , hour meter or not , and for electrical help we need to know if it is a 12v alternator or 6v generator .

Posting pictures will help a lot .

I have a 1952 8N that was "upgraded" with a Ford Industrial engine which has a front mount distributor, with no serial number on the engine block. I know it was a 52 from the previous block. There are a few other clues about the year model if the engine serial number is not available. [b:c7d33eeaae]John Smith's website[/b:c7d33eeaae] site has some good info about tractor identification.

Hope this helps.

There should be a an engine block casting date code on a boss/tag on the starter pocket. Alphanumeric date code is defined as: First character, single letter A-M, designating month block cast. A = January; B =February, etc. next, one or two digit number, between 1 and 31 designating the day of month. Lastly, a single numeral, designating the year of casting, i.e. 7 = 1947; 8 = 1948, etc. Just means the date your block was cast, actual engine build and serialization would be at least 30 days after casting. There is also a casting date code tag on the bottom of your aluminum hydraulic pump housing.
