Hypothetically, what would happen if a standard steel nut is tightened down onto a stainless steel bolt for, say, 20 years? I am second-guessing a recent project of mine. Thanks.

Not much unless there is:

a) a high presence of an electrolyte at the connection
b) the nut is galvanized.

You might also want to consider what materials are being gripped by the fastener ;-)

Are you asking for torque reasons or corrosion reasons??? The galvanizing process is flawed and not corrosion resistant as first thought.

My dentist damn near broke his face in surprise when I came in and complained of a galvonic reaction betwixt my partial and a filling. He asked 'how do you know about galvonic reations?' I said 'Dude - I own a boat'. It was okay with him. He learned a few things about horse care from me. (My last horse left here with my last daughter - a long time ago.)

:lol: ncorrigible. i have that issue with a metal toothpick and a gold crown. in my case, it wasn't the dentist, but one of the hygienists. i don't own a boat, but i took a lot of chemistry in school
