2N points - brass convex head screw

Does the EI conversion kit (part #1247) use the square can coil that mounts atop the distributor?

I'm doing the conversion because I can't seem to find a set of replacement points that actually fit properly, adjust correctly and have contacts that actually align with each other.

Top center, inside the distributor, there's that brass screw with the concave head that the coil spring rests on. That screw also holds the spade terminal on the condenser wire.

That screw snapped when I was taking it out. I don't know if using an ordinary phillips head 8-32 screw is an option.

Does the EI kit use that brass screw, and if so, does it come with a replacement?

Where can I find a replacement for that screw if I need one?

You need the concave head on whatever screw you choose to use. Otherwise, the pigtail will "walk".

The good news is that a fellow here on the board emailed me and said he could make them.

The bad news is that I got a new pc & lost his address.

Hopefully he or someone else will see this & offer to help.

The part # is 91A12159, NLA from FIAT and a web search doesn't even turn up any so you'd have to find one at a tractor boneyard.

Some years ago, Dell suggested using an 8-32 brass Allen-head screw.

So the head only has to be convex to keep the spring from walking? There's no galvanic corrosion issue that would require the material to be brass?

I'll use an allen screw if that'll work. The pan-head phillips screws I have on hand do have a deep spot in the middle though. It's not just an X cutout like the eccentric screw for points adjustment.

(quoted from post at 13:04:08 03/25/17) Yep, it should be brass.

There's a picture on the first page of this other thread I was just looking at.

It doesn't appear to have that brass screw. Or if it does, it doesn't appear to be in use for a coil spring. That post says it's running an external round coil. So I guess any old screw would work in there. Brass if it has to be brass, a plain one can be found a lot easier than the concave one.

If an external coil is used, what covers the top of the distributor body and cap to keep debris and stuff out?[/img]

Beian.I have taken a small nut and soldered it to the top of the pan-head phillips screw to make a pocket for the pig tail spring to set in.It works great.

You can buy a round coil conversion kit. Or make your own.

I'd find the biggest brass screw I could get that would fit in the insulator & slightly (and slowly) drill out the head.

All I could find was an 8-32 allen, steel.

I'm just going to put a little dab of dielectric grease in it & see how long it lasts.

If I find a source for the real screw I'll dig up this thread & post a link for others' reference.

A replacement for the brass screw came with the EI conversion kit I ordered from YT.

Can you post a picture of that screw - I can't imagine it's hard to make.

Sent it to you in an email

You would either make, or get from a kit a top plate that would mount to the distributor body and cap. It would need a spark plug wire nipple connected through the top to the cap, to go to the round coil. Alternatively you could gut the internals of a front mount coil and run a spark plug wire through it from the round coil.

I've made several using 1/4 inch plexiglass and a nipple cut off an old distributor cap. Ran a small bolt through the nipple to a spring loaded tab to connect to the cap.

TOH,

I could send you one out of my spare distributor, I just need it back. Let me know if you want me to do it.

Here's the old one:

This is the new one that came with the Pertonix 1247 EI kit.

It does not have the little hole in the center.
