Have a six volt starter that was working but bendix broke. When reassembled, starter turns slowly and gets hot. Checked fields to ground, no shorts. Checked armature
shaft to commentator, no shorts. Brushes are used but still good and making good connection. I noticed that when I bench test it, the armature acts like it is lifting to one
side. You can see the brush arm lift up. I cannot see how much clearance there is between armature and field, but could there be enough looseness in the bushings for
the armature to make contact with the fields? I’ve had this thing apart several times and cannot find a short or loose connection. Starter is not shimmed to tight, turns
easy. I’ve rebuild several before this one but this one baffles me.
