1 wire is easier but it has its draw backs.
#1 most take a high RPM to self excite.
#2 some are also known to cause a battery to drain over a long period of time say if it sits a month.

I only have one tractor with a 1 wires all the rest are 3 wire. The 1 wire will charge when it wants and then not charge the next time I use the tractor or start charging after it has run for 15 plus minutes. Plus the 1 wire cost twice what a 3 wire does

Yes, the 1 wire are simpler to install.

But I agree with OLD. I prefer a 3 wire for the reasons he has given. I have 2 tractors that came with 1 wire alternator and I converted them both to 3 wire buy changing the regulator.

A person's wiring knowledge and skill are often the determining factor in the choice.

If it works, that is what matters.

One thing I did is; the wire with the diode on it--instead of running that all the way back to the ignition switch, I just ran it to the + side of the coil. Same connection, just used a lot less wire!
