Hey! Long time poster on other subjects, we have 2 fords and a farmall cub. Yesterday we bought a R. Never even seen one before then! Hasn't been run in about 4 years. Any tips to getting it going? Oil is right at full but dirty. Radiator is full of clean greenish liquid. It has been under a shed. We are looking forward to learning about a new tractor!! MMs are rarely seen in Central AL. So this will be fun to take to shows. I think I did ok on price. He wanted$1000. I hit him with $600. We all ended up happy at 800. What is data plate on engine?

1949 R. Check for stuck valves. Nothing really different than any other motor. Remove side covers and tap valves.

We were wondering what was in the side covers on the motor. That's where the valves are? Good to know. Gotta get some manuals for it. We don't even know what to buttons push or pull to start it!!

welcome to the mm world grampa! for $800.00 for that tractor I think you did very well. the first thing I would do is pull the plugs and pour a quart of atf. in each cylinder, put the plugs back in and leave it sit, the longer the better, at least a couple of weeks. then try turning the motor over by hand on the crank, the atf will lub and break free any stuck rings and valves. check your wiring harness for any bare or broken wiring. contact Y.T. here for the manuals and order them. I got the operaters, parts, and sevice manuals here for my m5's, invaluable when it comes to working or repairing the tractor.

This is from a Z but R is made the same way. Valves are horizontal with long rockers. Had an R manual handy also.

I enjoy our talk today on the phone. Going by memory. You should have a start button if stock that has the battery cable on one side and a starter cable on the other side. As for ignition trace the wire form the coil back or if you want to by pass the wiring to make sure it does not have wiring problem hot wire it

I'm thinking that model probably has the combination ignition/light switch. If so, "off" is farthest left (counter clockwise). First click is ignition on, next two positions are ignition and lights both on, last click is ignition off and lights on. Should be a separate push button for the starter switch.

The R is a fun little tractor. Good luck getting it going. Keep us posted.

Glad to see someone put the decals on right. the R decal always goes after the Words Minneapolis Moline. by radiater on one side near the gas tank on the other side and no MM decal on the gas tank. I see so many done wrong. That being said the tractor is wrong. FYI The 1949 and some 1950 R's had a A different Decal. On the hood were the words Minneapolis Moline in RED letters. And No MM decal on the hood and no R decal but a large MM decal on the gas tank. The tractor is more correct that most MM tractor.Good looking tractor. I say get her running and Enjoy

A little bit of info on MMs, they all have two plates, one on the engine and one on the tranny, the one on the tranny is considered the ID Plate for the tractor. The first three digits of the S/N is called the prefix and identifies the model tractor, In 49, 50 and part of 51 they put the year in the S/N. They had 4 main types of front ends; A U is a narrow two wheel, N is a single front wheel, S is a wide front non-adjustable width, and E is a wide front adjustable width. So you have a 1949 RTU. T just means tractor.
Good Luck

Thanks to everyone for the info. MM is a different deal than our fords. Love learning new things. We pulled plugs out this afternoon and filled cylinders with transmission fluid. Also opened valve covers and all the valves move freely. Spark plugs were a bit sooty but looked good. Hope to get manuals, change fluids and pick up a 6 volt battery. Maybe be driving it next weekend!

I did brush hog to where that R is I have and looked it over a bit. Ignition on the one I have is a longish looking flip switch and the start should be a smallish looking push button switch

Minnie Farmer; Think for a minute, Pouring ATF in any overhead valve engine or a minnie horizontal valve engine with the valves above the spark plug hole is not going to free the valves.
