Gentlemen,The GVI MM Diesel Fired Up Today But

This afternoon I pulled the transfer pump, opened the bleed on the 3rd filter, and pulled the hose at the pump head....I turned on my electric fuel pump and it alone ran the transfer pump and in no time at all I had fuel at both places...I didn't have to use a drill..

I pulled a line at the pump head and cranked it over and had fuel quickly...I put it back on and cranked it over until I had fuel at 2 thru 6 injectors......1 never did seem to get any fuel....I stood on the ground and hit the starter and it quickly started on a 65 degree day..

However we have two problems...

1-After starting it ran away and probably hit 2000 rpms before I got it shut down at the pump....I then started it with the pump half shut off and ran it at 1000 rpms or so for about 10 minutes...It wanted to pop some....I guess the governor isn't working because it wants to run away if you shove the fuel stop all the way open..

2--I have lots of diesel in the engine oil so the pump seal is leaking..It still carried 30 lbs of oil pressure at 1000 rpms....

So it looks like the injection pump is coming off..Thanks to everyone for their help..I couldn't have done it with out you...

Pump seal is just behind gear on transfer pump. Very common problem. Governor is easy to get at. Just take off top cover on back of pump and see if everything is moving properly.I always crack lines at injectors to do final bleed. Cracking one at a time gives indication of how each cylinder is working, If you crack line and motor doesn't miss there ia a problem with that hole.

Supply pump seal is Ambac # PK7910. If it still gets fuel into the oil after the seal is changed the lower head seal and/or the control unit seal can leak internally also.

Can this seal be put in with the pump on the tractor or does it have to come off? I'm a dummy on these pumps...What little experience I have is with Roosa-Masters on 856-1206-1456 IHs,D-21 AC's,G-900 MM's-etc..

I'll pull the cover and look at the governor linkage...It sure won't idle down..Sitting unused for 25 years sure isn't good on diesels...

Just remove the 2- 1/4' bolts and pull transfer pump off. There is a small clip on pump gear. Remove clip gear and key that holds gear in place. You will see a small seal on shaft. Very easy to change. Too bad you didn't have another transfer pump then you can eliminate that electric pump. Not neccessary. No reason to remove pump.

Pulled the GVI governor cover off this afternoon and got the governor freed up....It was stuck wide open...The tractor now idles OK....None of the parts stores in town could help me with a transfer pump seal so I will have to make some phone calls in the morning...

These pumps were used on Massey.Oliver.Case etc. Go get some Seafoam or diesel conditioner.
Had an old Massey 95 (GBD) that we dumped conditioner in as we borrowed tires off for Massey 97 FWA we used. It sat outside for 20 some years never started. I sold it to a neighbor who put rubber on it. Threw batteries on it and fired right up. I ran like a clock. One of the best running MM 6's I have ever heard! Was sold to Western Canada guy for a puller. Ended to be a top puller with little work being done. Made me a major believer in good conditioner.

I'll put some Seafoam in it...I called several pump places this morning....None have a Ambac PK7910 seal and one said that they are getting hard to come by...Found some in Michigan that has a $10 minimum order so had to buy (4) at $2.70 each plus an unreal $16.27 UPS shipping..

When I first pulled the tractor out of the shed I noticed it was over full on the dip stick....I thought I'd put too much oil in it when I changed it 3 years ago....I drained 4 extra quarts out of the oil pan to put it down to the level mark...That diesel all went in to the pan just sitting in the shed for 3 years..I won't run it anymore until I change the oil but will let it sit for awhile and see how fast the diesel leaks in to it..

I had the same problem on a UBD. I took transfer pump out of injection pump and let it hang with a coffee can under it. Overflowed the coffee can sitting one winter. Replaced seal but still gets some fuel in crankcase. I shut fuel off so tank doesn't drain in to crankcase anymore.
