Serial number.

On my recently aquired "u"the serial number plate is rusted to a point where I can't seem to make out any numbers. Is there another way to determine what year my tractor is? I think I might be able to decipher the number off the engine serial number plate. Based on a picture I posted in another thread it's been suggested I have a later model. Just curious what year it actually is.

Yes you can get an idea from the engine serial number. Do you have any pictures of it you can post? There were several changes to the model U over the years an we might be able to pinpoint it with that as well.

You might be able to tell form the blocks and heads. Up to 1948, the tractors had a single block and head. IN 1948, the split blocks were available. Maybe that helps a little.

If it looks to be a later model with the split-block engine, it's probably a 1952 model. They used steel tags that year because of aluminum shortages due to the Korean war. The same applies to 1943 and 1944 models. Also in late 1951 they switched to cast brake pedals on the left side, also a good indicator of a late model U.
