How to unstuck rings

I am working on a 1940 utu. Very stuck. I got the block off and got the pistons pounded out. All but 2 rings are stuck. Is there something I could soak the piston in to loosen them? Last time I had stuck rings I ended up breaking a few and found out I could not buy rings for one cylinder, I had to buy a set of rings for the whole engine. I wonder if that is what I am looking at here? Thanks. Brian

I'm unsure what you are trying to do by in sticking the rings. Anytime a ring is stuck it needs to be replaced. I'd suggest removing the old rings, but first check the condition of your cylinder bores. If they are useable at a minimum they should be honed. Then you should use a ring grove cleaner clean up the pistons and install a new set of rings. With all respect given you're going to have a set of broken rings on your hands no matter what you do. New rings are a must.

I've had luck by using a small punch and pushing the rings inward toward the piston. This breaks them loose without busting them usually. But yes you'll need a new set of rings regardless if you break the old ones or not.

Set the piston in a can filled with ATF and let it sit. If you can heat it up to just below boiling a few times and the rings are likely to free right up

Have you tried Otto Gas Engine Works? They stock nearly all Hastings ring sizes in bulk and will sell you what ever you need.

One of the "old timers" at MM Hopkins Plant told me when I was there helping that you put Type "A" transmission fluid in the plug hole and then let it sit --- it's what we did when getting "stuck"tractors from the "bone Yard". Like "old" said to soak piston---I have also soaked stuff in ATF with very good results.
