MH50 6 volts or 12 volts

Greetings, all. I have a Massey Ferguson MH50.
I believe it is a 1956 model, as the serial number on the dashboard plate shows up as a 1956 model. It has been sitting under the shed for a year and i am going to fire it up soon. It does not have a battery, and i can not for the life of me remember if it takes a 6 volt or 12 volt battery. The online data specs show it to have a 12v starter, but does that mean it takes a 12 v battery or a 6 volt battery. It does not have an aftermarket alternator. The positive (red) battery cable is attached to the body, thus a positive ground?
How can i find out if i need a 6v or 12 v battery? Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Forums.

I think it should be 12-volt positive ground, but can't say for certain. Don't trust the red color alone to always be positive. The positive battery terminal is often a slightly larger diameter than the negative terminal, so that can be a clue when you look at the battery cables. You can check the tags on the generator and starter. If they are Delco Remy the tags often say, at least on the 12-volt ones. The color of the tag is a clue as well. The tags were colored coded for voltage: Black for 6 Volt, Red for 12 Volt, Green for 24 Volt, and possibly yellow or orange for 32 Volt.

Thank you. I will clean up the starter and generator and look for tags. Would these tags be on the top pf them or on one side?
Ill take a look and post pics once i get to the tractor.
Thank you.

Here is a picture of the tag on a 12 Delco Remy generator. It will give you an idea of what you are looking for and where to look. The starter tags were similarly mounted on the starter bodies.

Here is the generator. it is stamped 12v, so it is more than likely a 12 volt system. the starter motor tag is unreadable.
