1986 MF240 no start after filter change

I followed the insturction up until the 'high pressure lines at the injectors'. I loosened the banjo bolts on top and I have fuel flowing. The tractor ran for 5 seconds and died. My manual is NOT CLEAR on what lines I need to open and crank with the hand throttle in 'full open'.

Can someone help me? Tractor won't start at all.

The banjo fittings at the tops are just low pressure excess fuel returning to the tank. You need to crack the high pressure lines coming from the injection pump to the lower body of the injection nozzle.

Regarding the filter which one do you have? The element type with a bowl on bottom? Are you familiar with the gasket at the top being out of place and blocking fuel flow if it gets into the groove inside the top of the element on WIX/NAPA type filters?

If you have decent fuel to the injector pump via the hand pump lever, and you've cracked the nut Jim showed on each injector, crank at WOT until you see fuel at the injectors, then tighten the nuts and try starting it.

You will need crows foot or stubby wrenches. Normal wrenches are too long.

I hate changing fuel filters on our 240, always an exercise in bleeding it to get it to run again.

What you've been told is absolutely correct. BUT, if you grow tired of dripping diesel all over then snug up what you've loosened and pull it with another tractor or truck until she fires, saves a lot of wear on the starter. 3 or 4 High, it should fire off fairly quickly....unless the filter has the o ring in the wrong place. I've even rolled one off of a hill and had it running within about 40 feet.

Hi, totally agree with towing to start. Some tractors will start on the battery easily others will not. A short tow increases the cranking speed and normally BINGO!!!!!

Sorry for not updating this. I could not get the high pressure fitting closest to the driver opened but I got the first two open. I just wasnt patient enough. After those got fuel from priming it sputtered and finally fired up. Thanks for the help everyone.
