Hi folks,

Looking for tractor to help manage my land and plow snow. Ive come across two deals im interested in pursuing. The first option is a 56, Massey harris 50 gas,
based on serial number from what i can tell its a harris and not a ferguson. The second is an alleged 135 with front loader. The 50 is 1400 bucks and in good
shape. new rubber good metal leaks a little oil so im told. the 135 is " a good tractor " says the owner. But being that its also a gas and theyre so similar ( to
my knowledge ) to the 130 im not positive its a 135. that deal is sort of up in the air but looking like 2400 plus a henry .45-70 ive got. What would ya'll do?
what should i be looking for? and what can i look at to make sure that the 135 is actually a 135? ill post a photo of each here too.

I could be wrong but the supposed 135 looks more like an International, than a 135 Massey Ferguson to me.

Looking at it again it sure is hard to tell. but the sheet metal doesnt quite make sense to me. if it was an international what model would it be? im completely
unfamiliar with them.

Your $$$$$'s sir.
The 50 is old but was a beautiful operating machine when new.
The 135 ???? looks like a MUTT! Looks like a mechanical challenge that you had better be prepared for...
IF that is a 135 MF......sure as heck looks abused.......
Loaders on those 35/135 MF with out the industrial front axel .....walk away from it....

Bob Owner MF 35 .....

The 50 looks good for the price if it runs good. That looks like a MF38 loader frame on it. Does the rest of the loader come with it?

This doesn't look like a 135 to me:

thanks for the input bob! i appreciate it. the more im digging into that tractor in particular, its kind of a red herring. its looking more and more IH to me than anything as stated here already. seems to me to be a ringer for a IH 240. not sure what to make of that. but im thinking im keeping my rifle at the very least.

I don't know for certain, but it might be a 340. From what I see in those pictures the front axle, sheet metal and engine don't look right for a 135, and the hydraulic hitch looks like an IH 2 point fast hitch adapted to 3 point, to me.

When I consider purchasing a ..MF 35....Ferguson TO 35.....MF 50....MHF....50..MF 65...etc,etc, I always verify, does the
tractor have a dual clutch arrangement or single clutch arrangement?Single clutch ..the operator steps on the clutch pedal ,if the Tractor is in gear and moving, the tractor stops moving as well as the PTO STOPS TURNING!

Single clutch arrangement IS NOT LIVE PTO.LIVE PTO....when an implement is attached to the Tractors drawbar and or 3 point lift with the PTO engaged / operating / turning, the TRACTOR should stop moving forwards when the clutch pedal is depressed down approximately halfway to the running board. Continue to push the clutch pedal all the way to the running board and the PTO shall stop, IF the clutch operation does NOT work as per I
suggest...there is something NOT CORRECT with the CLUTCH arrangement.
I always consider, on a  MF 50..35..65   if the CLUTCH arrangement is NOT operating as per designed...I factor the COST of a CLUTCH /  PRESSURE PLATE assembly into the cost I shall pay for the Tractor.YES there are those who shall state "you probably just have to adjust the clutch"......50% 50% is not in your favor...been there done that.
With tractor operating verify three point LIFT operates as per designed.......NO JERKY JERKY LIFTING.......no immediate lowering of lift arms when engine is shut off!

Running Tractor through all six forward gears and both reverse gears. Listen and feel for signs of Brocken internal gears in transmission.....KNOCK..KNOCK..KNOCK. THERE is NO SUCH thing as a MINOR KNOCK..
With engine up to operating temp ....slowly remove RAD CAP......coolant should be frothing with AIR / BIBBLES......with engine operating remove OIL FILER CAP on side of engine.....minimum engine blow by should be present!.
Pic is of  a bad gear in a MF 35 Trans that I'm working on.....Clutch is from a MF 35 after years of usage........
Clutch/ pressure plate assembly.......purchased one new complete in the USA for <$375.00 two years ago..Internal 3 pony HYD pump...purchased on new complete in the USA for <$250.00 there years ago...
Someday I hope town a MF 50..
Good luck
Bob...

MY mistake.......
should read...

should read COOLANT SHOULD NOT BE FROTHING WITH AIR/BUBBLES...
also check to verify there is a THERMOSTAT installed in engine coolant and working.......eg..180 deg F

Hot damn thats a lot of good info. thanks a bunch for that. Ill be sure to put it through her paces as you described when i go check her out on saturday. If its decent and all kosher, ill do a write up on here showing you guys what came of it. gentleman with the "135"/ international something or other seems to have gone to being a ghost after i asked him to confirm a serial number for me after telling him the sheet metal didnt appear correct. oh well, i liked the 50 better anyway.

Any equipment i buy the first thing i do is to NOT crank it.

I crawl under it and crack the oil drain plug..I put a clear bottle

under it and catch the oil. I look to see if water comes out. A little could

be condensation but more than that could be a leaky cylinder jug. Which could

be from overheating and/or a cracked block. Price accordingly.

I have a MH50 and it has been a great tractor. The only problem I have is that it steers very hard. If I would put on a loader it would be too hard to steer. I do not have power steering. I think some came with it.
