Massey Ferguson 135 won't start

Hello all. I just bought a massey Ferguson 135, 1970 model with diesel engine. The guy was gonna haul it to the scrap yard so I gave him $200 for it just to see if I could get it running. He said he was bush hogging and noticed a funny sound coming from the exhaust, followed by smoke. He also said power seemed way down and it sounded like it was missing and that oil was coming out past the dip stick. I put a battery in it n just tried to crank it but it will only spin over and try to crank but eventually just die. Smoke is coming from the exhaust while spinning it over. I changed the fuel filter and bled the system all the way up to the injectors. Gotta find a way to get them loosened up, I'm guessing I have to pull the tank. Cranking it sounds like air is blowing back out of the air cleaner as well unless that's normal. On my 165 I don't notice because it fires right up. I'm mechanically inclined but never worked on a diesel before. Any ideas of what to try would be appropriated..

There should be NO air coming back through the air cleaner, if there is sounds like engine has internal problems. Blown head gasket, or broken EXHAUST rocker arm are two possibilities. Excessive engine blow by means piston and/or ring damage.

Sounds like it could be fixed, a diesel engine isn't too much different from a gas engine. If you can rebuild a gas engine you should be able to work on a diesel, but get a real MF shop manual ( http://www.agcopubs.com/ ) for it before tearing into the engine.

You got a deal there. I'd pull the sheet metal, tank and valve cover and then a compression test if nothing shows.

I might just get the top end rebuild kit to have handy just in case once I can get in there. I kinda like the little tractor so I'll at least give it a shot to fix it.

Soon as I got the tractor I purchased the owner's, parts, and service manual from Farm Manuals Fast. Hopefully they are good ones??
