6 volt starter with a 12 volt battery.

On this pony that I am working on, someone changed it to a 12 volt system. It spins the starter so quick and fast I'm afraid it might knock the teeth off the flywheel. What would be a good way to cut the 12 volts back to 6 volts for the starter only. I really need some ideas. Thank you in advance.

I have the same set up and never had any problem. It shouldn't hurt to leave it 12 volts. Just don't keep cranking for long periods if engine don't start.

As previously stated. long scrawny battery cables as a stop gap backwoods farmer fix .
How about checking on eBay for a real 12 volt starter ? Iskra has high quality for a reasonable price .
Cheaper and less headaches than replacing a flywheel ring gear .

that's just nuts. don't know why anyone would abuse the ring gear and starter like that. 6 volt spins it plenty fast on that tiny engine u could carry around in your arms. my 335 cid engine in my w9 mccormick spins plenty fast with 6 volts. its just that no one wants to up keep the 6 volt system. quess u could try a lawn mower battery with tiny thin cables.... or get a heavy duty 12 volt battery with heavy cables and put tractor in gear then press starter and go for a ride, hell with starting it. electric cars are coming in and you will have first electric tractor.

As I stated in my original posting that I'm working on this tractor trying to help a neighbor. He got this tractor set up this way. I was wondering if there was maybe a resister that might cut the voltage down to the starter, We both know this isn't the proper way to fix it, but was only trying to save some money. We need all the help we can get and not lectures. Thankyou

I had the same issue with the 6 volt Delco starter on my 12 volt-converted IH350.

An shop confirmed that this was hard on the starter mechnical parts and advised replacing the 6 volt field windings with 12 volt windings. The cost to replace them wasn't that much.

Ferguson TEA-20 Tractor.....6 Volt > 12 Volt conversation.... with no knowledge how the Starter was Engineered and or designed;

Torsional Torque drive failed:

These Starters (6 Volt original from factory) did not have a recoil / spring absorber rather a Vulcanized drive component:

Example of a 6 Volt Starter operated on 12 Volts....

The Ferguson Tractor..?TEA-20... Standard Engine? hit the market with a 6 Volt Starter. The starters ?Torsional Impact Device / component? was engineered and tested to operate on 6 Volts. (possibly some European Vehicles had / have the same device)

Owners and non owners have decided to convert their Tractors to 12 Volts. With out understanding the ?Torsional Impact Device/ component?. This component, shall and I have seen three of these devices fail. .. theses device / components are now 60 + years of age and when converted to 12 Volts operate for a very short time before failure.

Will these 6 Volt starters operate fine if converted to 12 volts with a proven history of very little usage as 6 Volts?????? The number of Cyclical cycles on a Starter is critical. Dammed near impossible to know calculate the starts of a starter over the past 60 years.

At the very least investigate proven practices to prevent damage to a starter when converted from 6 Volts> 12 Volts.

Some times the owners, or Mechanics,or a ?GOOD OLD BUDDY? may cost the owner $$$$$?s by not realising the ramifications of the straight swapping of a battery from 6 Volts >12 Volts.

I am not suggesting ?DO NOT? change from a 6 Volt battery to a 12 Volt battery but rather under stand there is more to upgrading a 6 Volt starter to 12 Volt supply merely by purchasing a battery and charging system.

Respectfully

Bob...
