Uh Oh...what happened?

I went out to start up my MF202 Workbull this morning. It started up ok and was idling for less than a minute and I heard a clunk and it died. I can push down the clutch and it will start and run. But as soon as I release the clutch, it dies again. No noise this time, it just dies. Both shift levers are in neutral.

What could have happened?

Maybe broken transmission input gear teeth, or PTO input gear teeth. If it has the two stage clutch, when letting the pedal up does engine die when engaging PTO clutch or transmission clutch?

I don't think it has a two stage clutch.

I would be checking the Hydraulic Pump.

Could you please expand on this a little. Like how the hydraulic pump could cause the condition I have now?

On my 202 with proper operating 3pt hydraulics, if I depress the clutch the pump is disengaged. To me that means the shaft coming from the transmission to the pump is either turning or not turning, depending on the clutch. If the filter or something failed in the pump that jambed it, it seems to me it would not rotate. So when you release the clutch the pump being locked shuts it down.

Although I do not know how to do it, I read somewhere there is a way to manually rotate the PTO output shaft that causes the 3 point to move up or down. For that to happen the pump would have to rotate which would verify the issue.

I do not own a MF 202.....I own and operate a MF 35 X ...Two Stage Clutch.....(Sister to MF 202):

Installed NEW . PUMP due to ICE damage....

OK, this is strange! I went out to check on things again just now.

Clutch pedal down, started up in neutral, let up on clutch, tractor stayed running.

engaged the PTO and the shaft started turning...I put it in gear and very gingerly let up on the clutch...the tractor moved as it should forwards and backwards.

Needles to say I was shocked

The last time I messed with it, I left the clutch blocked down. That was a couple days ago. Could the clutch have just been stuck? Would that cause the symptoms that I had?

The only thing new that I noticed when I took the PTO cover off is that the seal is leaking about a drop every second. I've never used the pto on that tractor so I really don't know how long it's been leaking. At least that's something that can be fixed pretty easily.

Anybody got any ideas of what may have happened?

Just went out and did some work with the Workbull. It's as if it never happened.

I guess everyone else is as stumped as I am about this. Not even a guess as to what it was and how it fixed itself?

(quoted from post at 21:11:52 02/25/19) It's hard to say what happened.

Yeah, especially with that big clunk I heard when it died that first time. My first thought was metal breaking. But, now that it's running all right, it kind of seems like something got stuck then finally got unstuck.

My only worry now is that since it happened once, will it happen again?

About that leak at the PTO, I changed the 1 1/8" PTO in my 8N to the larger 1 3/8" shaft. That was pretty simple. Just pull the old shaft out and stick the new one in.

What about putting a new seal in the 202 PTO? Is it going to be a pretty routine job? Or are there any surprises I might run into?

Sounds like something jammed up the pump or gears in the transmission. Does it have 3pt? Does it still work?
My 202 had the 3pt pump freeze and blow apart, made one heck of a noise when you let the clutch out. Probably not the issue with yours based on your location though.
I would be concerned that whatever caused it is still floating around in there. I'd check the hyd fluid for metal chunks etc.

I've used it with my box blade to move quite a bit of dirt since then and everything still works. Oil on the 3 point dip stick still looks good.
