First time owner of a 44 Special and lots of questions!

I purchased what I believe is a MH 44 Special. The serial number is 44G1RF 294017. Can you tell me what year it is?

It has live PTO, a 3 point hitch, front side PTO, and the standard front axle (not tricycle style). I'm thinking the front axle may have changed at some point?

My understanding is that the 44 special is basically the 44 with a couple options. So can I use the parts list for the 44?

Specifically, I'm looking for a seal kit for the 3 point cylinder under the seat (depth-o-matic), a seal kit for the hydraulic pump and a new pump gearbox housing.

Any advice or comments are appreciated!

Hmmm, something odd here....serial number has one too many digits, and if we drop
the last one, indicates a 1951 44 gas row crop. While a 44 and 44 special share
many common parts, a special in all models will have the long fuel tank whereas
lonly a 44 row crop will have the long tank ( and long engine tub to go with it) A
44 special will have a wider front axle in the standard form and most will have the
cast front wheel centres in all models. A 44 special gas will have the 277 engine,
but the diesel will have the 260 as do all 44's. When you say standard front axle
do you mean the square beam non adjustable wide front or the round adjustable wide
front vs. the tricycle gear? If it's the non adjustable axle, the it must have been
changed considering the serial number is for a row crop. Does it have 30 or 38 inch
rears? At any rate, pretty sure that the parts you need would fit all 44 models and
likely most 33 or triple digit models. Good luck with it, post some pictures.

What's a 270 kit?

The serial number has either a 1 or a slash between the 0 and 7. At first I thought it was a random scratch, but when you zoom in on it looks like it was on purpose?

Good looking tractor! I think that 1 you are seeing is a casting Mark or a mark
from the stamping die, not a one, so that indicates a 1951 44 row crop wide front.
Looks like someone may have just added the 'special' decals for some reason. Many
times when those tractors were overhauled a kit consisting of sleeves and piston
with a greater bore were installed for a bit more power....in your case, from a 260
cid engine to a 277cid. There should be a stamping on the upper right area of the
block just below the head like H260 plus a few other numbers. This will indicate
the 260 cid gas block, but it may have the larger bore. Only way to tell is to
measure the bore....

Ok, thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Do you know where I can find a gasket/seal rebuild kit for the hydraulic pump? I've looked all over and can't find one.

I think I may be able to help you with the kits. I will need a bit more information though. My e-mail is open....bottom right, classic view

Serial looks like a 51 44 row crop.

I have one.

The cast wheels, disk brakes and live PTO were options.

Welcome to the club.

There is no rebuild kit for the pump, can talk you through doing it.

I was working on a replacement pump

Wayne was trying to find the seals and gasket for me. My son works for CAT, so he can do it. Just need the parts.
