Pickle Diesel injector pump

Not quite a tractor, it's an '87 Ford with the international 6.9 diesel engine, no turbo. Carrying the slide in camper down the road it might get to 65 MPH level stretch with a tail wind.
Somewhere along my travels I picked up a used injection pump and wonder how you might go about preserving it for possible future usage.
I thought about removing all the plastic pieces on the outside of it and dropping it into a bucket filled with diesel and cover it up.
Any other thoughts? Perhaps too simple, but I did do that with a Hupp transmission.

For best pump shelf life, it needs to have test oil run through it, NOT diesel fuel. I've seen pumps set on the shelf over twenty years and work fine that were tested, then drained of test oil. Won't happen with diesel fuel, I still get pumps in for repair with stuck parts that have only set one year, especially if there's any water or bio-fuel inside.

I was hoping you would chime in and I appreciate it. So where would I find "test oil"? Amazon for a fast source? Currently that pump has been off the vehicle about 6 weeks.

Any diesel injection service shop would have it, be aware it's expensive too. Most common is Viscor 1487 test oil, it has preservatives for long shelf life diesel fuel does not have.

I just did a fast search and found it in 5 gallon pails. That might be a bit more than I need. I do know of an oil supply company down the road and they should be worth the call. Thank you for your info.
