I am going to look at a massy ferguson 540 combine on
Friday. It looks to be in good working order and comes with a
13 ft grain head and 4 row 30 in corn head. They are asking
$9400 for all of it. It has a grey cab . I'm from western
Pennsylvania and am having trouble finding a combine , so is
this too much money for this machine ? Also are they good
combines, any problem spots, etc. thank you

That series of MF's has a bit of a bad reputation. However, we have been running a couple of 550's for 20 years. 540's and 550 are similar I think.

My biggest problem with them is that they are tight to work on. If you are working in the rear end taking out the straw walkers takes some contortion (unless you are small and flexible, I'm 6' and not as flexible as I was 40 years ago). The engine compartment is tight too, changing starters on the Perkins 354 is a chore.

Main separator drive clutch is a chore to fix, and when it goes it is usually because the bearings and cross shaft need fixing.

We like the old traction drives better than the hydrostatic, very simple.

On the good side, generally, they are simple. No electronics.

Do some searching around on the Combine forum and on Ag Talk for lots more info / opinions.

That price sounds a little high to me.... but if it is clean and field ready...

Good Day,
JP.

Last time we bought an MF 510 we paid $1,000. But that was with a corn head only, and it was only in fair condition.

Unless the 540 is in outstanding condition I'd say it's probably worth less than half what they're asking.

"That series of MF's has a bit of a bad reputation". Funny you should say that. many moons ago my neighbour ran 3 MF 525 combines, in his opinion they were quote: "Rubbish" I think they gave him no end of trouble, so away they went. They got traded in for 3 Duetz-Fahrs, then he ran 2 Duetz-Fahrs and a JD for a bit, Then they got chopped in for one great big New Holland! I went by his place the other day and Lo and behold there was a big Claas Lexion in one of his wheat fields. So basically it has taken him about 40 years to get it right haha.
