JD 4010 12 volt - generator light is on. Do I dare drive it 3 miles down the road to get it to my repair guy? Or will it die enroute?

Gas - It will probably die

Diesel - Get it started and it will go

If it is gas and the
battery is fully charged
it will go 3 miles,no
problem.as was already
said below a. Diesel will
do it no problem

make sure battery is not low and your safe for at least a half a day or more running. 3 miles is nothing. piles and piles of them old
tractor are running with out a working charging system.

I ran my Ford 841S for years with out a working charging system. All one has to do is make sure it has a good charged battery and it will run all day and then some on a good charged battery

(quoted from post at 13:17:34 12/01/21) I would not tow. No steering or brakes. DRIVE it.

I agree with Roger. The farthest I'd tow a JD tractor of that era is to get it off a road if it happen to be dead on the road.

The flashers and lights will probably draw more current than the ignition. I would fully charge the battery and then drive it to the repair shop. Three miles at 18 MPH is only a ten minute drive. Your battery can supply how many amp-hours?

A coil only draws maybe 4 amps so if you fully charge a good battery before leaving and don't run lights or anything else NO PROBLEM GO
FOR IT..

For the heck of it try to ground the Gennys FLD post to see if it charges then ?????????? If so but NOT otherwise the VR may just be bad
or isnt well grounded.

Take a look at my Troubleshooting Procedure for non charging it may be something simple

When unloading ear corn I ran the 3020 most of the morning with a bad alternator (maybe 4 hrs straight). Once I got it started for the day I didn't dare shut it off. Thankfully it died while I was unloading the wagon and not in the field. That tractor has electronic ignition too. Charge it up a little while and 3 miles will be no problem.

(quoted from post at 13:08:23 12/01/21) Thanks, I'll charge it up and give it a go.

go to autozone and tell them you need a one wire ag alternator, they will know what you are looking for. After you get it, put the original generator on the shelf for posterity. To make sure I dont forget what something is I keep a metal strip of packing tape, wire, and a set of letter stamps from horror fright to mark what it goes to, IE, JD 4020...
