In comparison between a 1977 JD4230 and a 1982 JD4040.
What are the main difference to look for. I know that there are a lot of common parts and such, but what are the main improvements over that the 4040 had over the 4230. Engine, hydraulics, transmission.
Thanks

Pretty near the same tractor, engine, drive train chassis etc. are much the same.
4040 will have the hydraulic seat, rated at 10 hp less than a 4230..even Deere
advertising back in the day sold it on the virtue that a 4040 was a slightly
derated 4230 that...the heart beats slower; lasts longer... Either one is a very
good tractor.

The biggest difference is $5000 in price. Brother inlaw has 2 4040's and I see little difference between them and my 4230. I have an early 4230 and the latter ones have a good many improvements. Tom

I have a 77 4230 serial #40784 making it the last 1547th made. It's a quad with sound guard and air and 38 inch rear Firestones. It
has a denso starter and has always started great. Fuel tank a little small at 37 US gallons. Kinda like a 4020 with a good cab and
a high=low. It also has the improved shift towers where the shifters go through the side of the transmission housing. The 4040 has
larger fuel tank and lifts a bit more on the 3 point hitch I think. So a late model one would be very close to a 4040. As far as
the cab, on my 30 series [42 and 44] I put the JD 2 inch floor mat and install the cab post insulation. Just my 2 cents.......Ron

According to JD parts 4230 had 4 different fuel tank part #'s

Didn't they have different injection pumps? I seem to recall reading the 4040 pump being harder to turn up. But have seen plenty of people talk about adding about 10% to pump output which would seem to bring it right in line with the 4230.
